Here's a look at what's happening on the farm. We're well into green-up, and small spots of color are appearing as spring flowers begin to bloom. I ventured into the potager and discovered a bed of very tender kale that had survived the relatively mild winter.
It has been a dry late winter, but the ponds are partially full, and a mass of wood frog eggs has been observed.
The crocus are mostly over, and the hellebores are going strong. The daffodils are out in force. They are too aggressive for my tastes. Years ago I pulled up bunches of them and threw them over the hill to get rid of them. It didn't work out that way. They are hard to kill and animals don't eat them due to the toxic compounds in all their tissues. If only tulips had this protection!
In the wild areas spicebush makes a haze of yellow with its delicate blooms.
Best of all the gnomes are repopulating the garden and reveling in the spring colors.
