I love gardening and all its associated tasks: mulching, weeding, planting, and harvesting. Most of all I like eating. Gardening is great exercise, good for mental health, saves you money at the grocery store, etc, but the main point of it is realized when you're putting the results in your mouth. I love it when I can make a meal with as much home grown produce as possible, and of course the goal is always to minimize store-bought items.
In winter when other gardeners are poring over seed catalogs in anticipation, I'm revisiting photos of feats of culinary mastery, and dreaming of meals to come. Here are a few of my favorites.
Tom yum with pak choi from the garden, topped with a farm egg. Asian greens are the best. They are so versatile.
Cucumber salad and sauteed zucchini served with coconut jasmine rice. Great summer side dishes.
Pasta salad with chopped garden veg, asiago, and bacon, garnished with fresh tomato slices, basil, and a lavender sprig. Unbelievably yummy.
From my son: Veggie and herb fry-up. It's amazing how delicious a simple dish like this can be. It's especially tasty when prepared by someone else!
Syracuse salt taters! Invented by poor Irish salt miners (who else?) in Central New York. They spent their days boiling down brine, and threw their lunch in the pot, resulting in a delicacy fit for royalty. Irish ingenuity at its best.
I don't remember what this is, but doesn't it look delicious?
A cold drink garnished with nasturtium is the perfect way to relax when you're ready to get out of the kitchen.
